Dell in talks with Google over Chrome OS

Dell Inc is in talks with Google Inc over the use of the Chrome operating system on its laptops, a top company executive said on Monday.

“We have to have a point of view on the industry and technology direction two years, three years down the road, so we continuously work with Google on this,” Amit Midha, Dell’s president for Greater China and South Asia told Reuters in an interview.

“There are going to be unique innovations coming up in the marketplace in two, three years, with a new form of computing, we want to be on that forefront … So with Chrome or Android or anything like that we want to be one of the leaders,” Midha said, adding that there were no firm announcements to be made but talks were underway.

Dell Announces Latitude XT2 Laptop

Dell Latitude XT2 it just feels good. The rugged metal-alloy casing gives it a solid, substantial frame. Pick it up, and the 13.3-inch machine is deceptively light (3.8 pounds). Put all of that together, and you seem to have a premium choice for mobility-minded businessfolk in need of a tablet PC. It has style in spades and a host of great features.

The Dell Latitude XT2 has a very professional, business-like appearance with sharp lines and edges, all dark-grey design, and even exposed screws. This notebook is definitely not targeted towards those looking for the next designer notebook. Instead, it is aimed squarely at those who just want to get down to business. The brushed metal surfaces are actually specially painted covers that give the look of metal but with the ease of maintenance that paint gives. The finish resists smudges and is much easier to wipe clean than most brushed metal exteriors. If it was painted matte black and had a Lenovo logo printed on it, you would swear it was a ThinkPad.

The machine translation is pretty weak, but Dell 12.1-inch (1,280 x 800 pixel) Latitude XT2 looks to have just made its first tentative steps in a global launch. The video posted after the break comes courtesy of Korean site, AVING, where the convertible tablet was apparently just released. Pinch to zoom and two-fingers swipes. yup, it is in there. 11-hours of battery (6-cell plus battery slice) and DDR3 memory (max of 5GB!) too in a chassis just 2.5-cm (0.98-inches) thick. Click through for the video while we track down the official specifications that already seem to be aligning with the unofficial specs leaked earlier.

Dell Latitude XT2 Specifications:
* Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 1.4GHz (800MHz FSB, 3MB L2 Cache)
* Microsoft Windows Vista Business (32-bit)
* 12.1inch Premium WXGA (1280 x 800) LED-Backlight Display with Multi-touch

Google’s Chrome Tablet Concept Revealed

After last week’s iPad announcement by Apple, Google has been playing around with a similar web-tablet concept for Chrome OS. It went up on Google’s development site Chromium last Monday, two days before Apple unveiled iPad. Google’s User interface designer for Chrome OS, Glen Murphy, blogged about the tablet concept on his personal blog yesterday.

So far, this is just a concept of Chrome OS’s touch interface, but Telegraph claims that Google is already in talks with HTC, the handset manufacturer behind Google branded Nexus One and countless other Android powered handsets.

“Although Chromium is not an official Google website, the concept video has been put together by Glen Murphy, one of Google’s Chrome OS designers. Google is also reportedly in discussions with Taiwanese consumer electronics giant HTC about making a touch-screen tablet computer. HTC already makes many of the mobile phones that run Google’s Android operating system, and designed and built Google’s own-brand handset, the Nexus One.”

Chrome OS was initially meant for the netbooks and this concept could very well mean they could be considering the possibility of scaling their new operating system to touch input based tablet computers as well. Meanwhile, companies like HP are already working on their own tablet computers.

Chrome OS tablet actually sounds like a neat idea, if at all it ever sees the light of the day. Since hardware manufacturers like Dell and HP would very soon be rolling out their own iPad killers, it makes sense for Google to support touch input devices for Chrome OS.
