Now Hotmail in Your Pocket for Free

Microsoft India announced that Hotmail users can get alerts on SMS without GPRS connection and for free, starting Wednesday.

Hotmail users need to log on to www.mobile.live.com, feed their mobile number and enter verification code received on mobile to get started, the company said in a statement “With this fun and simple service, you can forget about going to the cyber cafe or logging on to your computer every time you want to check your mails”, it said. This service makes checking mails as easy as checking SMSs.

“You can now receive, read and reply to emails on your SMS. The service also enables efficient viewing of emails by specifying the email address/domain from which you’d like to receive alerts on your SMS”, the company said.

Out of the 506 million mobile users in India, only 18 million have GPRS on their mobile phones. With email access available only to a mere four per cent of the total mobile user base, Hotmail alert on your SMS? “Breaks all technological barriers” and helps one stay connected anytime, anywhere. All one needs is a Hotmail/Live ID and a mobile phone, it was stated.

Samsung Dual SIM Phone Loaded with Features

Samsung has unveiled its latest dual SIM phone, the B7722 – a device that can be called a first of its kind because it happens to be the first dual SIM handset to feature fairly high-end specifications.

Until now, only low to mid-range handsets came with dual SIM options. The B7722 has broken a tradition of sorts and comes with a decent spec sheet – along with dual SIM capabilities.

The phone is a 3G ready GSM handset complete with support for Class 12 GPRS (4+1/3+2/2+3/1+4 slots) 32 – 48 kbps, Class 12 EDGE and as mentioned earlier – 3G. Pertinent to note is that only one SIM card slot supports 3G networks. The phone is a touchscreen device with a 3.2 inch display. It has a decent 5 megapixel camera. Video recording is supported but only at QVGA resolutions (30 fps). There is an LED flash at the rear that aids in low light photography.  It also supports stereo FM radio with RDS and FM recording.

The B7722 has a Li-Ion 1200 mAhbattery that can provide up to 420 hours of standby time and a talk time of up to 12 h 50 min. The phone supports memory expansion using microSD cards.

The phone is expected to first reach Europe before coming to India. It’s price is expected to hover around the Rs. 23,000 mark in India – which, according to us, is on the higher side.

Get Live News on Your Mobile as You Get on TV

English news channel NewsX has now made its videos available on mobile phones with just a 30-second delay from what is seen on the TV. The service is primarily aimed at “tech-savvy” and “corporate people”, says spokesperson Ajatshatru Singh.

“This service is primarily for the urban and corporate people who are very tech savvy and who are happy using gadgets. It is for those who want news on the go – which is what we call the mobile generation… So as long as they have a device in their hands, the news can be delivered to them,” Singh, head of Online, NewsX, told IANS.

As part of this service which was launched last week, viewers can access the same news content on their mobile device as they see it on NewsX TV channel and also its website. A special mobile URL – m.newsx.com/live – can be used to access the same.

Asked why the channel felt the need to introduce this concept, Singh explained: “The opportunity to do this has always been there given that India has the fastest growing mobile market in the world. It was about a year ago that we realised that with so many handsets floating around, people will want to get any kind of content delivered on their mobiles – so why not news?”

According to Singh, the video service will best work on phones such as the Apple iPhone and high-end models of all other companies like Motorola, Nokia, Samsung or HTC.

Also, there are no extra costs for availing the service, except for the basic expense of using mobile Internet.

“We have no subscription charges, no fees attached with this. As long as you have a phone with Internet, you can log on to the URL and access news. There is also no specific operator we have tied up with. The service is cost independent and operator independent,” he said.
