Sony gives the Indian Blu-Ray Market a Push

Sony in India plans big initiatives for the Blu-ray market with the introduction of Blu-ray audio-visual products at a starting price of Rs. 9,990 and doubles the number of Blu-ray movie titles to 500.

Blu-ray enabled products will be available in a wide range of products including Blu-ray Disc players, Home Theatre systems, PlayStation3 & VAIO, which will provide High Definition picture and audio quality as well as internet connectivity to consumers. So, whether you are watching movies, listening to music, playing games, recording and storing content or all of the above, Blu-ray technology makes your High Definition world come alive.

Looking at a ten-fold growth in volume, Sony plans to capture 60% market share and increase number of outlets to 4000 by FY2012. Sony also offers a mega consumer promotion deal. Sony Launched CyberShot DSC-W380 Digital Camera

Sony has once again expanded its CyberShot digital camera series by launching the DSC-W380. Powered by BIONZ processor, this compact camera boasts a 14.1-megapixel CCD image sensor, a 24mm wide angle lens, 5x optical zoom and a 2.7-inch LCD screen. Not to mention, it also comes with a 45MB of internal memory, a microSD card slot, a USB 2.0 interface and the ability to record 1280 x 720 HD video at 30 fps.

Sony DSC-380 that pretty much resembles the WX-1. The DSC-380 comes with a brush metal finish and measures in at 91.7 x 51.9 x 19.7 mm which makes it easy to carry around. Moreover the DSC-380 is significantly light considering that the body is made of metal a mere 130 g with battery. As with most Sony cameras button placement is good and protrudes just enough to allow you to navigate with ease.

A nice addition to the DSC-W380 is the calendar mode that allows you to view images according to the month and date they were taken on. The best part of the camera is the 24 mm wide angle lens that allows you to capture a major chunk of the subject without having you to move far away. The camera also comes with a smile detection mode that automatically clicks the moment a smile is detected. Moreover it also comes with an intensity level slight, normal and big. S

The DSC-380 comes with a 2.7-inch LCD display that works well under broad daylight but sadly is not resistant to scratches. The camera has an image resolution of 14.1 MP and features a sweet 5x optical zoom and an optical image stabilizer.The Sony DSC-W380 is fast and takes just about 1.5 seconds to switch on thereby allowing you to shoot almost instantaneously.

Sony India Targets 45 Percent in Compact Camera Segment

Sony India Thursday said it planned to boost its leadership status in the compact camera segment by taking its market share from 42 percent to 45 percent in the coming fiscal.

The company, which launched a cyber-shot camera here, also said the new product was in sync with its global strategy of designing and creating innovative products that strengthened its brand identity.

The new cyber-shot camera, for instance, is equipped with two new technologies — Sweep Panorama that allows capturing ultra-wide pictures with a field view of up to 270 degrees, and High Definition Movie that enables shooting high resolution videos.

“The introduction of Sweep Panorama and HD Movie technologies will ensure that a wider consumer audience would be able to experience Sony’s technologically superior products,” said Takakiyo Fujita, Sony India general manager of marketing.

The Sweep Panorama and the HD Movie technologies will be available at a price range from Rs.12,990 to Rs.29,990.

The compact camera segment in the country is currently estimated at 1.3 million units and is expected to grow to 1.8 million units in the next fiscal.

Sony Ericsson’s Vivaz Announced

Sony Ericsson has announced the Vivaz that follows on from the Xperia X10 announced in November 2009, and is the second phone in the new family of communication entertainment phones coming to market in the first half of 2010. Sony Ericsson Vivaz will come to market in Q1 2010.

The Vivaz has high quality HD video allowing consumers to produce and broadcast their experiences with the latest video capture and sharing features.

The open platform also allows users to personalise their entertainment experience by downloading great applications through PlayNow and the Symbian Developer Community.

Sony Ericsson Vivaz features the new design philosophy ’human curvature’, first introduced with the Xperia X10, which will become a consistent feature of Sony Ericsson’s portfolio.

Sony Launches Desi Adda for The PS2 and PSP

Sony Computer Entertainment has announced the launch of Desi Adda: Games of India – specially developed by an Indian Game Development Studio – GameShastra Solutions Pvt Ltd, for the PS2 and PSP.

Desi Adda: Games of India are the first console games to be playable in 3 Indian languages – Hindi, Punjabi and Tamil. It features 6 traditional Indian games – Pachisi, Goat & the tiger, Kite Fight, Kabaddi, Gilli Danda and a dance game.

Developed for both PS2 and PSP, ‘Desi Adda: Games of India’ will be available in the Indian market at a suggested retail price of Rs. 499, for PS2 and Rs. 999 for the PSP.

Atindriya Bose, Country Manager – PlayStation, Sony Computer Entertainment said, “We are very proud to launch the first Indian game on PSP with localized content, in 3 Indian languages completely developed in India These are the long-established, traditional games of India that are now inspiring games on the very modern interactive platform of PlayStation. The game is the story of Avinash, son of an NRI businessman, who comes to visit his ancestral village. Since Avinash has lived all his life abroad, and this is his first visit to an Indian village, he is fascinated by what he sees. The story unfolds as he roams around the village, plays the different village games, and meets Gowri and Gopal, a couple who are in love, but cannot get married as the village head, Garjan Singh, is opposed to their match. Avinash must now seek different people in the village, who play a part in this story one way or the other, and try to find a way to get Gowri and Gopal married and also save the village from the evil plans of Garjan Singh.

The 6 traditional Indian games include:

Pachisi – Pachisi is a turn based board game played using the cross shaped board and two rectangular dice. It’s a game of change and strategy. Pachisi game played between the Pandavas and Kauravas is the significant event in the great epic of Mahabharata.

Aadu Puli Aatam (Goat & the Tiger) – This is a hunting game between the extravagant Tigers and the deceitful goats. The general rule of this interesting strategy game is the number of tigers varies from 1 to 4, and the number of goats from 11 to 12 to 23 or 24. The general aim is to hem in the tigers so that they cannot move, but the arrangement of pieces, the method of play and the rules of capture vary from game to game.

Kite fight – In India people fly kites to cut other kites. Specially made threads, mostly coated with fine powdered glass, are used for the kite fight. Kites are made from colored paper and are available in various shapes. Two bamboo sticks called “tuddah” (which is straight) and “Kaamp” which is arched, hold the paper together. The string attached determines the performance of the kite.

Kabaddi – Two teams compete with each other for higher scores, by touching or capturing the players of the opponent team. Each team consists of 12 players, of which seven are on court at a time, and five in reserve. The two teams fight for higher scores, alternating defence and offense.

Gilli Danda is a game like cricket or baseball but without a ball and with a different set of rules. The ball is replaced by a small stick called Gilli. The Gilli 3 to 4 inches long and both the ends are tapered. Danda is a 24 inch long cylindrical stick used like a bat. Player can enjoy batting the Gilli or fielding among the free cattle.

Dance game is a beat matching game, in which the user has to match the beats of a song playing in the background, by pressing a combination of buttons at the right time as they scroll on the bottom of the screen. The aim is to try and successfully press the right combination of buttons at the right time in order to win the game.
